Frequently asked questions

Who is the Cadense AFO Shoe designed for?

This shoe was built for people who wear ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) due to conditions such as stroke recovery, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, or spinal cord injuries, among others.

It’s engineered to comfortably fit braces while supporting a smoother, more natural walking pattern. The adaptive sole works with the AFO to assist forward motion and help offset the added weight of the brace — making each step feel more controlled and less effortful.

Will my AFO fit in this shoe?

Yes — this shoe is designed to fit over AFOs. It features an extra-wide opening, multiple volume options (E, 3E, 6E), and extra length to accommodate a wide range of brace types. Each box includes removable shoe fillers to help fine-tune fit, especially if you wear an AFO on only one foot. If your AFO is especially bulky or extends significantly behind the heel, we recommend selecting a higher volume option or sizing up for comfort.

If you're unsure, our team is happy to help you choose the best size and fit for your specific brace.

How is this different from other adaptive shoes?

Most adaptive shoes make it easier to put shoes on — Cadense AFO Shoes make it easier to walk.

Our shoes feature patented Variable Friction Technology, which allows the sole to glide when lifting your foot is difficult and grip when you step down for stability. This reduces resistance during walking and helps your foot and AFO move forward together, instead of catching on the ground.

What kind of feedback did physical therapists share?

Physical therapists who observed the study participants noted visible improvements in foot drop and gait quality, and even recommended the shoes for rehabilitation sessions. The AFO Shoe helped users roll their foot forward more easily — enhancing both comfort and mobility during therapy.

What types of shoes are best for people with foot drop who wear an AFO brace?

For people with foot drop who wear an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), the best shoes are designed specifically to accommodate the brace. This includes an extra-wide opening, adjustable closures, internal space for the AFO, wear-resistant fabric, and a sole that supports smooth forward motion. The Cadense Adaptive AFO Shoe was engineered around these needs to make walking with an AFO more comfortable and natural.

How does adaptive footwear support individuals using an AFO for foot drop?

Adaptive footwear supports individuals using an AFO by reducing friction during foot swing and improving stability during weight-bearing. Our Variable Friction Technology allows the shoe to glide when you drag and grip when you step down, helping users walk with greater control and confidence while wearing an AFO brace.

Are there shoes specifically designed to wear with AFO braces?

Yes. While many shoes attempt to accommodate braces, few are designed specifically for AFO use. The Cadense Adaptive AFO Shoe was built from the ground up as a shoe for AFO braces, with an extra-wide entry, adjustable fit, and internal structure designed to work with ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) rather than forcing the brace into a standard sneaker.

What makes adaptive shoes different from regular shoes for AFO users?

Adaptive shoes differ from regular footwear by prioritizing ease of entry, adjustability, and mobility support. For AFO users, this means less twisting, forcing, or pressure around the brace. Our Cadense AFO Shoe also integrates Variable Friction Technology, which helps manage foot drag and step transitions—features not found in standard athletic shoes.

Do AFO shoes need to be wider or more adjustable than regular shoes?

In most cases, yes. AFO braces add volume around the foot and ankle, which is why shoes designed for AFO use need a wider opening, adjustable closures, and flexible fit. The Cadense AFO Shoe features a large front flap and multiple volume options (E, 3E, 6E) to help accommodate AFO braces without pressure points.

Can the right AFO shoe improve confidence and independence when walking?

Absolutely. When an AFO fits comfortably inside a shoe and walking feels smoother and more predictable, users often feel more confident moving independently. Many Cadense AFO Shoe users report improved endurance and reduced fear of stumbling, especially during longer walks or daily activities.

How is the Cadense AFO Shoe different from other adaptive shoe brands?

The Cadense AFO Shoe stands out by combining AFO-specific design with patented Variable Friction Technology. While many adaptive shoes focus on easy entry alone, our AFO shoe addresses the walking mechanics of foot drop and brace use, making it a functional solution rather than a cosmetic adaptation.

Game changer for afo fit

I have a personally fitted afo, but have found all my shoes cause it to dig into me in a painful, blister causing fashion. These were the first shoes that I’ve been able to comfortably move around in.

If the shoe fits wear it!

I’m a relatively new customer at Cadense, I wear one of two custom AFO braces full time for foot drop. I’ve searched and tried numerous “AFO friendly” shoes.

Walking keeps me moving and motivated, the Original AFO shoe does exactly what they say it does. There is a learning curve to get comfortable doing things a little differently.

This is the only shoe that is deep enough to accommodate my brace, it makes it so easy to put on and take off with the Velcro attached laces. No more tying shoes!

I’m starting with one shoe on the affected right side. These shoes have already saved me from two stumbles.

I’m looking forward to the new AFO shoe to come back in stock in July, I sure look forward to trying them!

Thank you Cadense!
JW

Amazing supportive shoe

The AFO accomodating shoe is truly a brilliant design. My physical therapist is delighted. I would have given 5 stars except I am not a fan of unisex designs. (The shoe is inclusive of men and women. My shoes are a little spacious in the heel, for example. Also, I can hardly wait until they are available in other colors than black.

Thank you for your positive review of our Adaptive AFO Shoe! We are thrilled to hear that it has been supportive and helpful for you. We appreciate your feedback regarding the unisex design and we will definitely take it into consideration for future improvements. We are constantly working to expand our color options, so stay tuned for more choices in the future. Thank you again for your support.

Where have these shoes been all my life.

I had polio at age 4. Heavy iron braces, ugly shoes, dragging feet. So so many shoes I have tried, so many tears. Last year I purchased the Cadence sandals for women to test them out. I was so astonished at how I well I stood and walked. Still using a brace, walker and wheelchair. When the ad for AFO shoes being developed my first thought was, yeah right, good luck with that. I put my name on the list to be notified and forgot about it. a couple of months ago I noticed that the shoes were available so reluctantly I ordered a pair. I cannot take them off my feet. I fell in love. My brace slid right into the opening without any trouble. My Leg slides along and I am able to take a step instead of hiking my leg up which stresses my hip, which exhausts me where I have to sit down. I do not want to stop walking. The slide and rocking of the construction of this shoe is a miracle for someone who has lived buying two pairs of ugly shoes all my life. I am so excited and wait for some other colors to emerge. Thanks to all who developed these awesome shoes. Barbara Crowe

Great

These are the first sneakers Ive owned that dont fight against my AFO. They open up enough to get everything in comfortably, and then feel secure once closed.

Easy with AFO

The design actually makes sense for AFO users. I dont have to force my foot in, and the slight slide helps me move forward without tripping as much.

Very helpful

I didnt expect the glide feature to make such a difference, but it really helps. My foot doesnt catch like it used to, and I feel more confident walking.

Easy to put on

Putting shoes on used to be the hardest part of my morning. With these, the wide opening makes it easy to slide my brace in, and Im out the door in seconds.

No more hassle

Getting my AFO into regular sneakers was always a hassle. These open up wide and close easily, and once theyre on, they feel stable and comfortable.

Less effort

What I notice most is how much less effort it takes to walk. The shoe helps me move instead of holding me back, which is something I havent felt before.

Velcro opening

Ive tried a lot of wide shoes, but these are different. The opening and structure make it simple to fit my AFO, and they dont look medical at all.
