At Cadense, we believe that mobility empowers lives, and this mission aligns perfectly with the work of Erin Gallardo, PT, DPT, NCS, co-founder of NeuroCollaborative. In the latest episode of The Mobility Mission, Erin joined Cadense co-founders Johannes Sauer and Dr. Tyler Susko to discuss the transformative power of neuroplasticity, her innovative NeuroSpark program, and how tools like Cadense Adaptive Shoes are shaping the future of rehabilitation.

Erin’s Journey: From Passion to Innovation
Erin’s journey into physical therapy began with a fascination for the brain’s complexity and its ability to adapt and recover. Initially expecting to work with athletes, she fell in love with neurorehabilitation during her training.
“I fell in love with the brain and the possibility of working with someone who's been through something life-changing,” Erin shared.
Her early clinical experience revealed the need for ongoing, bite-sized education and mentorship in neuro PT. This realization led Erin to co-found NeuroCollaborative in 2016, alongside Claire McLean, with a mission to provide mentorship, continuing education, and community support for neuro professionals.
The Power of Neuroplasticity
One of the central themes of the episode was neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt, change, and form new pathways. Erin explained its importance in neuro PT:
“Neuroplasticity allows us to see potential and possibility in every client. With the right environment and practice, no one is stuck in their current state.”
Dr. Susko echoed this, highlighting how Cadense Adaptive Shoes leverage neuroplasticity by creating a new environment for movement, stimulating the brain to rewire itself. The shoes’ Variable Friction Technology helps patients achieve smoother gait mechanics and build confidence in their mobility.
Tools for Transformation: Cadense Adaptive Shoes
When discussing tools in therapy, Erin emphasized the importance of aligning interventions with patient goals.
“Tools like Cadense shoes offer an elegant solution, avoiding the need for temporary fixes like paper or duct tape. They help normalize gait patterns while maintaining balance and stability.”
Dr. Susko shared insights from Cadense’s product development, noting how the shoes were designed to solve real-world challenges observed in neurorehabilitation.
“The aesthetics of gait are as important as the aesthetics of the shoe. Walking confidently helps patients feel less self-conscious and more empowered.” Dr. Tyler Susko
NeuroSpark: Mentorship and Community for Neuro PTs
Erin’s flagship program, NeuroSpark, offers neuro professionals ongoing mentorship, continuing education, and a collaborative community.
“We structure NeuroSpark around research-based learning methods—small, consistent doses of education paired with collaboration and reflection,” Erin explained.
The program is open to neuro PTs, OTs, assistants, and students, welcoming both beginners and seasoned clinicians. Enrollment opens three times a year, with the next cohort starting in January 2025.
A key challenge in neurorehabilitation is encouraging patients to stay motivated. Erin shared her insights:
“Motivation comes from tying goals to what’s meaningful for the patient. When someone believes in their ability to achieve an outcome, their behavior starts to align with that belief.”
The discussion also explored how clinicians can embrace their role as coaches, guiding patients to see themselves as active participants in their recovery.
